REPORT: MacKinnon to the Mooseheads
RDS is reporting that Nathan MacKinnon, the first overall pick in last month’s QMJHL entry draft will be traded from the Baie-Comeau Drakkar to the Halifax Mooseheads.
Mooseheads’ GM Cam Russell confirmed the trade of second round pick Adam Erne to the Quebec Rempart for two first round picks (2013 & 2014) and a second round pick (2012). When asked if there were any other deals to announce he responded, “No comment”, but indicated he’d been on the phone all day.
Details have yet to surface as to who and what the Drakkar will be recevieing from the Mooseheads, but the trade will be apparently be announced and MacKinnon presented to the media at a news conference on Wednesday.
Terry Waterfield with the Mooseheads media relations team stated there was no press conference scheduled for Wednesday, but added “that can change between now and then.”
MacKinnon, a native of Cole Harbour, NS, was selected by the Drakkar despite never confirming whether he was willing to report or not. Obviously after he was selected and Baie-Comeau was still unable to convince him to state his intentions it became clear a trade would likely occur.
Halifax has been hotly persuing MacKinnon once B-C was determined the first overall choice.
There is much speculation as to the composition of a package necessary to acquire a player of MacKinnon’s calibre. Many beleive it will require the second overall pick in this year’s draft, Jonathan Drouin, plus a package of talented veteran players and future high picks.
It seems Carl Gelinas will likely be included, and some have hinted at Alexandre Grenier who was picked up by the Moose at the draft could be included if the Drakkar are looking for more immediate help. It would be a coup if Halifax was able to acquire MacKinnon and retain the young talent they already have.
We will wait for confirmation of this deal, but Halifax is certainly excited about this prospect. I know I am.
