MacKinnon and Frk confer before a face in QMJHL preseason action

Nathan MacKinnon (22) and Martin Frk (91) confer prior to a faceoff in QMJHL preseason action

It didn’t take long for Nathan MacKinnon and Martin Frk to develop chemistry. 1:18 as a matter of fact. That’s how long it took for the tow to hook-up for the first goal of the QMJHL preseason. MacKinnon demonstrated great strength and speed, bursting down the right side into the Cape Breton zone and finding Frk breaking to the net.

The two appeared to create chances throughout the game and MacKinnon’s pace seemed to be too much for a young Cape Breton defense. Having seven returning rearguards, Cape Breton was likely using this first preseason game to figure out who was worth giving a further look.

With a young defensive core combined with only a sprinkling of veterans up front, the Screaming Eagles fail to generate much offense.

Halifax Mooseheads rookie goalie Zach Fucale

Rookie Fucale looked composed

The Mooseheads started rookie goaltender Zachary Fucale, whom they selected with the 11th pick of this year’s Q draft. Despite not seeing a great deal of action, Fucale seemed very composed in the net and posting a shutout through his period and a half of work. Anthony Terenzio finished the second half of the game.

In addition to Frk, Trey Lewis, Ryan Falkenham added powerplay markers for the Mooseheads and Matt Boudreau added a shorthanded empty netter to put the game away.

Jonathan Béland had the lone goal for the Eagles.

Halifax and Cape Breton will close out this preseason home-and-home tomorrow.
