Rainmen Haywood Named Player of the Week

Haywood is quickly becoming a leader for the Rainmen

The National Basketball League of Canada announced that Joey Haywood of the Halifax Rainmen has been named Player of the Week for the week ending November 13, 2011.

Haywood, a 6’1″ 170-pound guard from St. Mary’s (N.S.), is the first Canadian-born player to earn Player of the Week honours. After signing with the Rainmen following the team’s season opener, Haywood’s performance has improved steadily upon being able to practice with the team.

In Halifax’s two wins this week, Haywood demontrated that increased comfort and is quickly establishing himself as leader on the team. On Thursday, November 10, in Halifax’s 121-95 win over Moncton, Haywood scored 21 points in 27 minutes of play, while adding four rebounds, six assists and two steals. He added another 17 points in the Rainmen’s 100-93 victory over the previously undefeated Summerside Storm.

Haywood and the Rainmen will next see action Friday night when the play host to the Saint John Mill Rats, who are coming off a big win of their own over the league leading London Lightning.
