2013 CHL Top Prospects Game in Halifax?

Tonight the future of the NHL will be on display as the CHL Top Prospects Game is held in Kelowna, BC. The Halifax Moosheads will be represented this year by probable first round pick Martin Frk and Andrew Ryan.

The timing for the two players couldn’t be better. Frk appears to hitting his offensive stride the past few games after missing most of the first half of the season with concussion issues. The same can be said for Ryan, who many were anxious to see combine the potential they saw in him with a larger frame still on the grow. An ankle injury in training camp sidelined that plan for nearly three months though. Both Frk and Ryan have been back with the team since before the Christmas break and have had time to settle into the lineup. Tuesday night will be interesting to see just how they stack up against the CHL’s best.

I always love seeing our local guys compete in these events. Like Nathan MacKinnon’s inlcusion in the Subway Super Series, he is already stamped his ticket to this event next year, but might that mean a short trip?

While the players in this years game deserve to take the spotlight, I can’t help but look ahead to next year’s event and where it may be held. I don’t think my little blog with deflect that attention too much.

No decision on the host city for 2013 will be made, or at least announced, until after the 2012 game, but speculation has already begun amongst the media and interested parties on Twitter, many of whom suggest Halifax would make an ideal host city. Of course many already know about Nathan MacKinnon, who would be a likely choice for team captain. Fewer though have gotten the opportunity to see the poise-beyond-his-years of Zachary Fucale, a 16 year old starting goaltender in the Q. Fucale has opened the eyes of many and vindicated Cam Russell’s decision to select him ahead of a couple of higher ranked goalies at the QMJHL Draft in June.

Add to that, Jonatan Drouin, selected second overall in last year’s Q draft, will likely have a shot to be selected and the Moose already have strong representation. Drouin has already posted 12 points in the 13 games since joining the Mooseheads in December and will certainly benefit from being another year older and bigger next season.

Obviously not wanting to speak out of turn, Mooseheads VP Brian Urquart did not want to comment directly on the process, but Halifax is certainly interested.

“We’ve inquired about hosting the 2013 CHL Prospects game,” said Urquart. “We think our fans would enjoy seeing the best NHL prospects in the world go head to head.”

Since adopting the Team Don Cherry versus Team Bobby Orr format in 1996 the game has been held in a QMJHL city only once: Quebec City, 2007. Previous incarnations of the game were held in Montreal (1993) and Moncton (1994). In its current format the game has been hosted by Ontario 10 times (5 in Toronto), it would seem like it due to come out East. With Halifax being the hometown of Nathan MacKinnon and his junior hockey team, is there a better time to bring this game East?
