Halifax Announced as Host of 2013 Top Prospects Game
I’ll justify being a couple days late posting this announcement with the reasoning that I had this pegged over a month ago. Well, kinda. I was simply pointing out what seemed to be such an obvious choice that the Canadian Hockey League would be foolish not to do it.
Tuesday, the CHL made it official and announced Halifax would be the host city for the 2013 Home Hardware CHL/NHL Top Prospects Game. The game will be played Wednesday, January 16th. Not announced at this point in time is that there will also likely be a couple of days of events leading up to the big game, including a skills competition.
“The Halifax Mooseheads are very excited to host the 2013 Home Hardware CHL/NHL Top Prospects Game,” stated Mooseheads Majority Owner Bobby Smith. “We look forward to welcoming 40 of the best NHL draft eligible players in the CHL to the Halifax Metro Centre next January. Our season ticket holders and fans will be really interested to watch the top young players from the QMJHL match up with the best prospects from the OHL and the WHL.”
Smith will likely be showcasing his team’s own talent in the game. The Mooseheads current roster includes three 16 year olds that have a legitimate shot at being selected for the game. Uber-prospect Nathan MacKinnon is probably already have a “C” stitched onto his jersey for the game. He’s currently the favourite to go first overall in the 2013 draft. Teammate Zach Fucale is the newly crowned QMJHL record holder for wins by a 16 y.o. goaltender (impressive considering the goaltending talent that has come through the Q) and could be a candidate to be the first goaltender chosen in the 2013 draft. And despite beginning the year late, second overall pick, Jonathan Drouin has impressed, producing above his weight class (literally) since joining the team.
Halifax should be in the midst of a strong contending season when this event comes to town. The team has impressed this year and is still looking strong heading into the playoffs, despite being led by a young core. The Top Prospects game will be just another high octane event for the Mooseheads in what should be an exicting 2012/13 season.
Next up, the playoffs are not far away and the team is looking to make some noise. Should make for some exciting spring hockey at the Metro Centre for the first time in a while.
“The Canadian Hockey League is very excited to bring the 2013 Home Hardware CHL/NHL Top Prospects Game to Atlantic Canada for the first time in the history of this prestigious event,” said CHL President David Branch. “This event provides our players the opportunity to showcase their skills before hundreds of NHL scouts in a competitive best-on-best game in advance of the draft, while fans in Halifax and those watching across the country on Sportsnet and TVA Sports preview the next wave of NHL talent.”
