Christmas is right around the corner and many people are still trying to find that right present for that special someone on their list. That special someone on your list may be into sports and stuff like I am. Now as a grown man, it is amazing how little my Christmas list has changed since I was a kid. Just more boozy, I guess.

You’ll notice the headline is Big Days Downtown. Emphasis on the plural of Days.
That’s because it took me more than a couple of days to spend my Big Day Downtown money.
So this year we were to ask our social networks how we should best spend the money given for our Big Day Downtown. I had some guidelines for the recommendations, but otherwise I was happy to hear what my friends thought.
The first thing I wanted to do for Big Day Downtown was not up for debatable. I needed a haircut, and I wanted to try Sailor Bups Barbershop for sometime. This was of course prior to the G-Men raiding the fine establishment, although I was close by to get some pictures of the actions.
I tried to head down to Sailor Bups on a Saturday evening. We were making a family outing of it as I had the wife and kids with me. The hope was for me to run in get a quick cut from the Bup while they strolled around town, but it didn’t quite work out that way. I underestimated the popularity of the Sailor. There was a lineup and with no appointments and the first come first serve policy, it was either sit and wait and leave my wife to watch our two boys for a little longer on her own, or go grab some food and take another stab at the haircut afterward.
I’ve been selected once again to highlight some of the great things that can be done in downtown Halifax. Every year there’s a twist, and this year is no different. Instead of allowing me to spend $150 however I want (read place $150 on red at Casino Nova Scotia roulette), the Halifax Downtown Business Commission wants to know what you think I should do with the money.
So, whatcha got?
But here’s a little info that I hope will frame you thinking. First something practical; I need a haircut. Badly. the flow is shifting to a flon’t. I am not someone that can get grow my hair out and it look alright. It just swirls around and upward like the topping of a hairy cupcake. Yeah! Sorry for the mental image. I suppose you could help me choose where, but I have been wanting to check out Sailor Bup’s Barbershop.
Really beyond that I am open to suggestions. I have a wife and two small kids, so ways to include them are welcome. My wife has a birthday coming up shortly and our anniversary in right around the corner. Now both those events take place after the September 12th deadline for the Big Day Downtown campaign. But if there are some creative ideas in that direction, I suppose gift cards could be purchased… loophole
My kids are two years old and five months. The older guy loves truck and climbing on things and the younger guy likes to put things in his mouth. The latter could be particularly unpalatable for suggestions downtown. Frankly these guys love most things we take them to, as long as we get outside.
Or of course you could choose that I could selfish. Since I am mainly into sports, checking out the new HFX Sports Bar could be pretty cool.
So I am all ears. I will take your ideas into consideration when planning my #BIGDAYDOWNTOWN.
As for the blog, it has been too long since I’ve been active here. That is going to change. I have a great post I have worked on for a while. It has just been the thing called life (see two small children above) and an actual day job.
I was tempted to keep the couple days growth I already had and give myself a bit of a headstart. But that just wouldn’t be in keeping with the spirit of the campaign. I didn’t want to incur any bad karmo.
For those that may not know, Movember is a charitable campaign that encourages men to grow moustaches for the month of November to raise money for prostate cancer. Think of it as the Run for the Cure is to breast cancer as Movember is to prostate cancer. Mo for the Cure.
If you would like to donate to Movember or participate go to the Highly Touted Mo-Page.
So I was honoured to be chosen to participate in this year’s installment of the Downtown Halifax Busniess Commission’s Big Day Downtown. I had just gotten my blog off the ground last year when they held this promotion, so I wasn’t necessarily ready to take part.
Now one year later, with the new name installed, Highly Touted was ready.
I wanted to follow this years’s theme, which was “Try Something New“, but also keep my day relevant to the nature of the blog, aka sports. I thought long and hard about how I could accomplish that and have some cool experiences along the way.
